Tracking The Suns Activity

WEB 3 Day Forecast of Radiation Storms

Tracking the Sun's Activity

Current Conditions

According to the latest forecast, solar activity is expected to remain elevated over the next three days. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a geomagnetic storm watch for May 12-14, indicating that a moderate solar storm could impact Earth's magnetic field. This storm has the potential to cause minor disruptions to power grids and satellite communications.

Live Imagery

Live imagery from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) shows that the sun has been producing several solar flares in recent days. These flares are often accompanied by coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which are large clouds of charged particles that can travel towards Earth. The SDO images can be used to pinpoint the location of solar flares and CMEs, and to track their progress as they approach Earth.

Past Events

In May 2022, two significant solar flares were captured by the SDO. On May 10, an X58-class flare was recorded, followed by an X15 flare the following day. These flares were some of the strongest types of solar flares, and they caused minor disruptions to power grids and satellite communications.

The colossal X58-class solar flare was the strongest solar flare recorded since 2017. It caused a temporary disruption to power grids in South Africa and Australia, and it also affected satellite communications.

Potential Impacts

Solar storms can have a variety of impacts on Earth's infrastructure and technology. These impacts can include:

  • Disruption to power grids
  • Interference with satellite communications
  • Damage to electronic equipment
  • Health hazards for astronauts and passengers on high-altitude flights

The severity of the impacts depends on the strength of the solar storm and the location of the affected area.

Preparedness and Mitigation

There are a number of steps that can be taken to prepare for and mitigate the impacts of solar storms. These steps include:

  • Monitoring solar activity forecasts
  • Developing backup plans for critical infrastructure
  • Shielding electronic equipment
  • Educating the public about the risks of solar storms
By taking these steps, we can reduce the potential impact of solar storms on our society and economy.
